Lent: Almsgiving
February 18, 2010Thinking Spring
February 22, 2010Finally, we come to the third of the traditional Lenten disciples: prayer.
Whether or not you are religious, I think every person needs some time and space in her life to be calm and to refocus. The world is very hectic and loud. We need times of stillness to calm our spirits, to re-evaluate our priorities, to let our minds wander and then to come back renewed.
During this season, it is very helpful to take time daily or weekly to sit in stillness (try for at leats 15 minutes). Light a candle or some incense. Remove all distractions (cell phones, televisions, computers, etc.). Focus on your breathing and let yourself grow calmer. There are no expectations, just being in the silence. As thoughts come into your brain, let the go or turn them about as yo will. If journaling helps you, do that. The key is to take time to let the stillness pervade you.
