July 29, 2013Dog Days of August
August 2, 2013I have some travel coming up for my job. I have to admit that I rather enjoy work travel, even though preparing to go away can be stressful. After all, before I leave, I need to clear things up at the office, tidy the house, and pack. Travel itself can be stressful too, with the lines and delays and expense. And during work trips, I often work more hours.
But work travel can have some benefits:
- Flights are one of my few opportunities for time uninterrupted by media. I can't use my phone or the Internet. I don't watch the movie. That leaves me with time to catch up on reading or to craft. I have also done a good bit of outlining and writing while aloft.
- Travel to another city is a great opportunity to try local restaurants and new foods– often while on an expense account!
- I find myself more interested in working out in unfamiliar surroundings. When most of my days are spent indoors in meetings, it's great to get outside for a brisk walk or run. As a bonus, you can discover the neighborhoods of the city you are visiting.
- I rarely have time to sightsee on a business trip, but I try to find time to check out some local shops. The local shops give a sense of the area. Chatting with the owners and staff is one of the great joys of travel. Plus, I've found some of my favorite gifts.
Do you enjoy business travel? What do you like? Hate?
