Doing Too Much
January 23, 2009Things You Should Have — Lists
January 27, 2009I promised 2 weeks ago that I'd do a series of posts on tools you should have to help you keep your life in order.
The first and most important tool you can have is a good calendar/planner. If you are technologically savvy, you may keep your calendar in a pda or in your cell phone. I use a paper calendar because that's what I like. Do what works for you. But do something. If you do choose a paper calendar, make sure you can carry it with you easily.
Once you have a calendar, it's important to know what to do with it. A blank calendar is just extra weight to carry. The first thing you should put on a calendar is key annual events: birthdays, anniversary, major work events — especially those that require travel. Place any other commitments on the calendar as soon as they are scheduled. Also, put in reminders about things you need to schedule or do at least 2 weeks before they need to be done. For example, remind yourself to schedule a chimney cleaning in early September, to buy Thanksgiving tickets right after Labor Day, to order garden seeds in February.
You should make it a habit to update your calendar as soon as things come up. Another handy habit is reviewing your calendar every morning and at the end of a work day (about 5 or 6) to make sure that nothing slips your mind. When I get busy with something, I can forget everything else on my calendar. Having a regular visual reminder can be hugely helpful.
