Reality Check
December 8, 2008Christmas Countdown – 2 Weeks
December 10, 2008The holidays can be a time of extreme overindulgence.
This overindulgence can take many forms. Some people overeat at holiday parties. Others drink to excess (if you do, please don't drive). One of the less known dangers, though, is giving too many gifts.
What? you may exclaim. What can be wrong with giving gifts? Sometimes, we can attempt to measure our affection for people by the monetary value of gifts or by the magnitude of our effort to find something "perfect." When this happens, we run the risk of devaluing our relationships, adding stress to our preparations, over-stimulating recipients, and escalating the gift-giving war.
It's okay to say "Enough." It's okay to decide to stop exchanging gifts. It's okay to set a dollar limit for gifts or to limit the number of gifts each person can receive.
We live in a land of plenty. Sometimes, the abundance can become so overwhelming that we don't even notice it. Scaling back can actually make us more aware of all we have.
