Dreaming vs. Doing

April 16, 2010Tackling a big task is a lot like having a dream. It can seem overwhelming — as if it's something you'll never be able to complete.
One of the best strategies for addressing a huge task is to break it into smaller chunks. Separate the task into several discrete steps. For example, if the task is your spring cleaning, you could divide it by room or by task (vacuuming, dusting, mopping, cleaining out closets, etc.). If the task is a do-it-yourself project, divide it by steps.
Schedule each piece of the task for a limited but realistic amount of time. (You aren't going to dust a 10 room house in 15 minutes unless you do it with an air gun.) Give yourself a specific break between tasks. Unless a task is physically or mentally daunting, don't make the break too long. You don't want the momentum from your initial success to dissipate and you don't want to get distracted.
Once you've finished the whole task — if it takes hours or days — give yourself a reward!
