Labor Day Shopping
September 4, 2009The “Meaning Tos”
September 8, 2009Despite the fact that we're still two weeks from the autumnal equinox, U.S. society treats Labor Day as the end of summer. Fortunately, the fields don't agree.
Now is a prime harvest time for many crops. A stop at a farmers' market or a roadside stand will bring you a bounty of late summer veggies and the beginning of autumn's squashes and apples.
The foods coming into season now are hardy and will last for a while. And they taste great in rich and heraty dishes like soups, stews, and cobblers.
Plus, many farmers are harvesting their second crop of greens for wonderful salads. So don't stoip buying and preparing fresh fruits and veggies — even if Labor Day is past. There's still a lot of summer's bounty left in the fields.
