April 17, 2015This may be an unusual post for Tax Day, but here we go.
Anyone who's read this blog for a while knows that I love to save – time and money. But there is a time to save and a time to spend. After all, we save to make our spending possible.
Why save time doing chores if you don't use that time to do something that you love? Why save money if it's not to make some aspect of life (yours or someone else's) better? Knowing what you value and what you are willing to spend your time on is one of the most important things you can decide.
But the saving/spending dichotomy shows up in other ways too:
- You buy a special outfit or a pair of fancy shoes and then leave them in the closet waiting for the perfect moment. But moments are rarely perfect an we can find ourselves waiting so long that the clothes or shoes go out of style or no longer fit. And then what? Have you ever donated clothes that still had the tags attached?
- You might buy a favorite food or a bottle of wine and hold on to it so long that it turns.
- You wait to do something you've dreamt of until the time is perfect, not realizing that there is no perfect time.
- You hold on to a gift rather than using it and celebrating it.
There's a line in the Bible that tells us not to store treasure on earth, where moths and rust destroy, but in heaven where things last forever. So save what matters, and spend what passes. There is no perfect here. Live what is now and hope for what is to come.
