Autumnal Equinox
September 22, 2009Christmas Countdown — Three Months To Go
September 24, 2009From now until mid-December, the evening will be getting shorter. Until March, the hours of darkness will be greater than the hours of life.
That may require some changes in your schedule. Somehow, it seems to be a greater challenge to get out and run errands or to exercise outside (even just walking the dog) when it's dark by the time you get home. I always find that, when it get dark early, I want to get home, make some comfort food, and curl up with a craft or a good book.
When daylight hours are few, you need to carefully plan the errands that require sunlight. You don't want to be dealing with the lawn in the gathering gloom. You'll also need to use your weekend hours for errands better undertaken in daylight.
Another useful strategy is to use dinner preparation time for other household chores. Stews, soups, braised meats and the like all take a while to cook. That's what makes them yummy. Use the cooking time to do the basic household chores — vacuuming, tidying, cleaning the bathroom, mopping floors, dusting, folding laundry. If you make that a practice, by the time dinner is finished and the dishes are done, you can spend the rest of the evening in front of a fire with your book or craft.
