Black Friday Preparations
November 27, 2008The Gift Card Dilemma
December 1, 2008Since we have entered the prime time of shopping seasons, here are some hints to help you stay safe and sane as you shop:
- Try to carry everything you need (credit cards, cash, ID, keys, ads) on your person so you don't have to carry a purse. Of course, don't leave these things in a coat pocket. Keep them inside your coat.
- When I see an ad in a circular for something I want to pick up, I just tear it out and carry it with me. That way, I can match inventory numbers to make sure I get the deal. Also, it can help store staff find exactly what I want.
- Never let a clerk take your credit card out of your sight. Never.
- Carry an envelope to keep all your receipts. It will help if you need to return anything.
- Make sure you park in a well-lit space. Most mall security officers will escort you to your car if you ask. ASK! Especially after dark.
- Do not use your car as a gift storage spot. If you have to store gifts in the car during a shopping trip, put them in the trunk. The blanket over lumps in the back seat fools exactly no one. Thieves regularly break into cars at malls and and other places (like schools during sporting events, etc.). If you are a victim, the receipts will help you prove your loss. Check your homeowner's, renter's, or auto insurance to see if the theft is covered.
- Break your shopping into several small trips. Perhaps you can hit a few stores in a given mall on the way home from work. That way, you won't face a mall marathon. Plus, the crowds are usually smaller on weeknights.
- Try to group your online purchases to take advantage of free shipping offers. If you can't meet minimums alone, combine your order with a friend or colleague's.
