Buying Moratorium

September 19, 2016I just thought I'd toss out a few of my favorite tips to make my time more productive. Some of these are likely repeats, but it's good to keep them at the front of your brain.
- Know your own energy levels. If you're a morning person, don't save the tasks that take great focus until just before bed. they will take longer and the outcome will be worse. Use your prime time for demanding tasks and do less demanding things (say, folding towels) when you're on the down-swing.
- Do things at the first opportunity. That way, you just need to complete the task instead of remembering it AND completing it. It's amazing how much mental energy you waste reminding yourself of what you need to do.
- Get into the habit of finishing tasks completely instead of partway. The grocery shopping isn't done until the groceries are put away, basic prep is done, and the reusable bags are back in the trunk for the next shopping trip. The laundry isn't done until the clothes are folded and put away.
- Use little blocks of time well. I do my meal planning while I walk the dog. I empty the dish rack while my dinner cooks. I pay bills on my lunch hour. I read the newspaper while I commute.
- Know the difference between relaxation and wasting time. Reading, napping, going for a long walk with the dog — that's relaxing. Channel-surfing, scrolling the newsfeed — more likely wasting time. Relaxing is ALWAYS worth your time. The other things — not so much.
