February 7, 2017Thinking Spring
February 10, 2017After yesterday's post about entertaining, I thought I'd offer some hints about how to organize a potluck.
If you are a guest:
- Ask what you can bring or offer something specific. If you hate cooking, you can always bring beverages, a salad, or something pre-made. But whatever you agree to bring, bring that!
- If you bring your dish in something non-disposable, put your name on it.
- Bring the utensils you need to serve your dish.
- By the same token, if your dish requires special toppings, bring those too.
- If your dish will require electricity or the oven or stove or space in the refrigerator, clear it with the host in advance.
- Label your dish with any common allergens or let people know if it's vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free.
If you are the host:
- Be ready with a few suggestions if people ask what they can bring.
- Clear as much space as possible in the refrigerator.
- Clear the table and counters to hold the food.
- Put your serving spoons, forks, etc. in an easily accessible place.
- If any of your guests have known food allergies or limitations, make sure that they will have a few options.
- If several people are bringing crock pots, put a surge protector on the counter.
What are your hints for a good potluck?
