February 1, 2018We’re continuing our series on getting your life in order. Today, we turn our attention to how you spend the time allotted to you each day.
Time is our most precious resource. We can’t make more time, no matter how hard we try. But we can use our limited time well.
The first step in using your time well is to know your energy flow through the day. Are you the sort of person who wakes up ready to go or do you need at least 2 cups of coffee before you’re fit for civilization? Do you hit your stride late in the day or are you solar-powered, losing energy once the sun goes down? Clearly, you should try to schedule your most complex and important tasks when you are at your best.
Second, think about the parts of your day that are most stressful. Is it getting out the door in the morning? Getting dinner on the table? Chore Saturday? Look for ways to reduce that stress. For example, if coming home stresses you, consider do some dinner preparation (chopping vegetables, putting ingredients in the slow cooker, setting the table, etc.). To make mornings easier, use a few minutes the night before to pack your lunch, ready your bag, and set out your clothes. Simplify chore day by listing all the chores that need to be accomplished, plotting them carefully to limit backtracking and to avoid delays. For example, if one of your chores is to stain a bookcase, you can schedule it so that you can complete other tasks while the bookcase dries.
Third, lists are your friend. You can make them on paper or use your smartphone. You can make them daily or weekly. Lists help you keep track of what you need to accomplish and ensure that nothing gets forgotten.
Fourth, don’t discount the value of routine. Having a rhythm to your mornings or evenings is comforting and provides structure to your days. Having a weekly or monthly chore routine can help you keep on top of housekeeping. You needn’t be a slave to your routine, but it’s a starting point for your efforts.
Finally, make sure that your schedule includes time for rest and recreation. We can’t work all the time. We need time to sleep, to spend with friends, to read and watch tv, to enjoy nature, etc.Holy leisure has its place in everyone’s life.
