Reflections on Lent

March 18, 2014I'm not what you'd call an early adopter when it comes to technology. I don't even have a garbage disposal or a dishwasher. This summer, I plan to replace my clothes dryer with a clothesline as much as possible.
But this weekend, I used two new types of technology that seem useful. (Now realize that these are initial impressions. I may change my mind after further use.)
First, I tried out Turbotax. My credit union gives members a discount on using the online software. Since my taxes are becoming increasingly complicated, I thought I'd give it a try. It's a bit more expensive than I first expected (my total for federal and state was just under $80), so more expensive than doing it myself but less expensive than hiring an accountant. On the plus side, it makes it much easier to do the calculations and keep track of all of the schedules. And I loved the sidebar that shows your refund or tax payment as you go. On the down side, you still need to gather all the information and input tons of data. And if you make a data entry mistake, your results will be wrong.
Second, I've started wearing a Fitbit Zip. That experience has been a joy. Set-up was fast and easy and I don't even notice that I'm wearing it. Syncing data is fast and easy too. The real value for me though is in being able to keep track of my progress throughout the day and to make sure that I'm getting enough high intensity exercise each day. I'm in my earliest days of using it, but I already love it!
What technology helps you meet your goals?
