October 18, 2017If you are a regular reader of this blog, you've probably figured out that I generally have a lot going on in my life. My job is hectic and so is my private life. But I need to keep things organized and moving forward.
The only way I can make that happen is by keeping lists. I've tried various apps and other methods, but the thing that works best for me is a paper list. I usually carry a small notebook and a pen. Each day has its list for work and home. I try to keep one week's list on a single page, though I often keep work and home separate. As I complete a task, it gets crossed off the list. If I don't finish a task one day, it's there to finish later. If I find myself with extra time, I can get a head start on the next day.
My lists have lots of benefits:
- Crossing things off a list is very satisfying.
- When I think of something I need to do, I can just add it to the list to handle later. I don't need to interrupt my flow or fear forgetting an important task.
- When I can't finish my list, it doesn't stress me out. I just move it to another day.
Lists keep me focused and prioritized. They are flexible enough to let me adapt to changing situations. And I'm far less likely to forget something important.
What do you do to stay on task?
