Holiday Evaluation
January 10, 2018Martin Luther King Day
January 15, 2018Monday is the observance of Martin Luther King Day, so, for many people, it will be a three day weekend — the first long weekend of the new year. So, what can you do with this extra time?
- Play tourist in your town. Unless you live in a ski resort or a very warm place, tourist numbers are low this month. Take advantage of the smaller crowds to visit a museum, hike in a park (weather permitting), or see the landmarks. You might even find special deals for locals.
- Restore order to your house. No matter how well you planned, holidays disrupt order. that's their purpose — to disrupt our humdrum lives to focus on bigger realities. So, spend you extra time taking down and storing decorations. Making room in your drawers and cabinets for the presents you received. Deciding what you can donate. Putting furniture back where it belongs.
- Use the extra time to cook to fill your freezer. Long days are a great time to braise meats and veggies, assemble casseroles, make soups, and chilis, and stews. You can portion them and freeze them for those days that are just too busy to cook. Bonus: having the stove and oven on will warm and humidify your house.
- Have a crafting or reading day. Gather your books or supplies, make a pot of tea, put on your coziest clothes, and have at it!
- Camp indoors or have a pajama day. Start with a decadent breakfast (French toast, waffles, a strata), build a big fire, snuggle up in pjs or a sleeping bag and watch movies or play board games.
Notice what's not on this list: shopping. Three weeks ago you got presents. Do you really need anything now?
