Lent: Fasting
February 17, 2010Lent: Prayer
February 19, 2010The second traditional Lenten discipline is almsgiving. Traditionally, this means the sharing of material possessions, particularly money, with those who are less fortunate.
There are many ways you can think about this practice. You can do it in combination with fasting — giving up a meal or eating out or a movie or…. and giving the money that you would have spent to a charitable cause. By giving up a time-consuming habit, you might have more time to volunteer. You can donate away extra possessions (clothes, books, household items). You can not buy anything that is not absolutely necessary.
Once again, the goal is to simplify. To pare your life down to its essentials and to focus on non-material things. You are clearing space in your life to allow it to be filled with things with things of true value.
