Summer Health

June 12, 2013Schools around here let out last week. Although many kids participate in camps and other organized events while parents are at work, they tend to have more unstructured time in the summer. But just because the time is unstructured doesn't mean it shouldn't be fun, stimulating, and productive.
Here are some ideas for kids in the summer:
- If the weather allows, there should be some outside time each day. There's a lot to be said for playing in the sprinkler, catching lightning bugs, or just running around. (See last week's post about the importance of sunscreen and hydration.)
- Try to limit daily screen time. Screens include computers, televisions, tablets, video games, and smartphones. (This one will be a challenge. I know how addictive a smartphone can be. I'm physiologically attached to mine.) As much as possible, tie the screen time to specific goals. For example, kids can use the Internet to research a vacation destination or to look up events happening in your town.
- Take advantage of the family-friendly events that blossom over the summer. Many cities offer free concerts, sports leagues, and outdoor movies. Some museums have special family events.
- Intriduce kids to the source of the food they eat. Pick your own events at farms and orchards are great. So are farmers' markets. Unless things are exceptionally bisy, most farmers are happy to spend time talking to kids about growing things, about the produce they offer, and how to serve it. Some even offer samples. Complete the circke by letting the kids help cook and serve the day's purchases.
- Reading is your friend. Read as a family — even outside! You can each read your own book. You can read to your kids. Your kids can read to you. Or all of the above. If you don't know what to read to your kids, ask your local librarian for suggestions.
- Spend some time making things — crafting, gardening, woodworking, painting, drawing, writing stories, etc. Nothing stimulates the brain like learning new things and being creative!
