The final reason for not entertaining that I’d like to consider is financial.  You may feel that entertaining is too expensive.

Well, yes, a catered event or an elaborate meal for dozens will be very pricey.  Adding high-end alcohol to any event will up the price as well.

Still, for folks on a limited budget, there are some options.  You can host a movie night and invite friends to bring their favorite DVDs.  For refreshments, make microwave popcorn and rootbeer floats.  It will cost less than $10.  You can host a potluck for a group of friends.  You can host a cookie exchange or a craft party. 

You don’t need favors or decorations or fancy entertainment.  Basic refreshments and the company of people you care about are all you need.  And don’t let any "lifestyle" shows tell you different!
