I Resolve to Eat Better: Part I
January 21, 2008I Resolve to Eat Better: Part 3
January 23, 2008Eating better starts with breakfast. For me, this is a huge challenge, because I’d much rather loll in bed for an extra 15 minutes than get up and nuke oatmeal or pour milk over cereal. All too often, breakfast ends up being a diet soda and a breakfast pastry as I run out the door. So, I leave the house cranky, still hungry, and on a sugar high that will crash before 10 a.m. And I traded a few hundred calories for absolutely no nutritional value.
If you can’t wake up early enough to eat a decent breakfast, at least keep easily accessible healthy breakfast food close at hand. Half a whole wheat bagel is a good choice. You can buy sectioned citrus fruit in jars (skip the sugary liqud in the jar) and most grocery stores sell cut up fruit. You can eat a banana or an apple or some other piece of fruit on the way out the door — a piece of fruit is just as portable as a muffin or danish. These things are also more filling than the less healthy options, so you won’t find yourself starving before lunch.
This doesn’t mean you can never have breakfast treats. I don’t want to live in a world without sticky buns. But stocking the house with apples and oatmeal instead of donuts and Pop-tarts is a good way to improve your eating habits.
