April 30, 2008It’s pretty clear to most folks that the economy is in pretty tough shape right now. Gas prices edge ever closer to $4 a gallon and food prices are increasing at their fastest pace in years. Uncertainty about the future adds to the strain.
All of these factors make palanning and taking care of your home even more important. Organizing your errands means that you can run several errands in a single trip. Planning meals allows you to cook and eat at home and use up the leftovers. If you plan well, you can buy staples in larger units and stretch your food dollars farther.
There are other ways to use your elf skills to save money.
- Rather than entertain in restaurants, invite friends into your home. Consider a potluck cookout or a sundae bar.
- Write a letter instead of sending a card. You’ll save $3 plus the gas it costs to get to the store.
- Plan ahead and get books out of your public library instead of paying for the instant gratification of having them delivered to your door.
- Set up a DVD and CD exchange among your friends rather than buying or renting. (Do not duplicate your friends’ CDs and DVDs. It’s illegal and immoral.) You can also share books.
- Hold a recycling party for accessories or small household appliances that are in good shape. It gets rid of things you don’t want and may keep you from having to buy something new.
- Look at inexpensive entertainment options. Rather than buying $75 concert tickets, look for free concerts or other events that are morecommon in the summer
- Improve your organizational skills so that all bills are paid on time. Late fees are a waste.
- Look for austerity you can live with. If it isn’t livable, you won’t do it.
