Heat Wave — Food and Drink
July 7, 2010Enjoying Summer
July 20, 2010When it's 85 by 6 a.m. and over 90 at sunset, outdoor workouts can be dangerous. Your body heat can rise drastically and it's easy to become dehydrated. If you do work out outside, wear wicking clothes, take plenty of water, and go as early or as late as possible.
If you have a gym membership, this is a good time to use it. Gyms are usually climate controlled and have plenty of water fountains to help keep you hydrated.
If you don't have a gym membership, don't discount the possibility of working out at home. You don't need a lot of space or special equipment to do basic strength training. A simple yoga mat is all you need to do plank pose, pushups, crunches, rotational crunches, bicycle, squats, leg lifts, and back stretches. With a few hand weights, you can expand the repertoire even more. This equipment will come in handy again if the winter is particularly snowy.
Don't let the extremes of weather keep you from taking care of yourself.
