Get Your Health in Order, Part 2: Eating Right
January 6, 2016Back to the Friday Tidy
January 8, 2016We continue our new year's series on establishing order in your environment. This week, we're focusing on health.
So far, we've talked about exercise and eating right. While those things are essential, there's more to staying healthy. I don't claim that this is a comprehensive list, but here are some things to keep on your radar as the new year begins:
- People need sleep — preferably seven to nine hours a night. If you regularly get less than that (and you don't have an infant), you may need to look at what you can cut out of your life to get more sleep. If you get more than that regularly, you may want to check with your doctor for a health and depression screening.
- Speaking of doctors, take some time in the month of January to make appointments for checkups with the doctor, dentist, any specialists you see, any screening tests you need, and even the vet for your best friend. You don't need to actually visit soon, but it's good to get these things on the calendar so you don't forget.
- Want to be productive on a bad weather day? Use the time to create a health history for yourself. This should list any relevant family history (heart disease, cancer, etc.) and list all the medications you take (even over the counter ones and supplements), every test you can recall, and any major medical procedures. Include the names and phone numbers of all of your health providers. Then make sure it's in a place where a loved one can access it if necessary.
- The largest organ in the human body is the skin. Take care of yours! Moisturizer and sunscreen are your friend — as is drinking plenty of water.
- Remember the need to rest and relax. (This is my downfall.) No one can go at full speed all of the time. Take at least one evening (or the equivalent amount of time) each month to do something you find relaxing. Maybe you'll want to meditate or take a bubble bath or go for a long walk or nap in your hammock or read that novel everyone at work has been talking about or binge watch a favorite show. Whatever it is that lets you slow down and rest your mind and body or appreciate the world around you — do that!
Stay healthy, my friends.
