Trying New Things
September 5, 2016Fall Resolutions
September 9, 2016A few weekends back, I went shopping at a local farmers' market. And, as always happens, I wanted to smack myself for not visiting the market every weekend during the summer.
Yes, farmers' markets are usually more expensive than grocery stores, but the produce you get is a whole different level of quality. Most of the fruits and vegetables were picked within 24 hours of your purchase, so you are buying them at their peak. They weren't pick unripe to allow for transport and time in the store. The colors are brighter and the flavors are richer. You get more variety as well. And, they often let you taste before you buy!
Plus, you can talk to the people who grew the produce. In my experience, the farmers have great ideas of things to do with the produce. During my visit, one farmer described how to cook a vegetable I'd never seen before (a cross between zucchini and summer squash). It was darn tasty! Even your fellow shoppers will be full of great ideas.
Many farmers' markets offer more than fruits and vegetables. I saw baked goods, meats, cheeses, honey, eggs, and soap. All carefully crafted by the people who own the booth. You can grab breakfast or lunch while you shop.
In most parts of the country, the markets will continue to be a rich source of produce well into October, so make it a point to stop by. You'll find amazing foods that will make cooking and eating a joy.
And someone remind me next May that a visit to the farmers' market needs to be on my weekly schedule.
