Fall Cleaning – Part 1
October 8, 2015Fall Cleaning – Part 3
October 10, 2015Now that your kitchen is tidy, it's time to focus on the public rooms of your house — the living room, dining room, and family room:
- Getting public spaces in order can be summed up in one word: DE-CLUTTER. The less stuff you have lying around, the more restful the house will feel and the easier it will be to keep things tidy. You are far more likely to sweep or mop if you don't have to move 25 things and then put them back. And the fewer knick-knacks, the less dusting.
- If you are currently using your dining room table for anything other than dining, clear it off and prepare it for its intended purpose. Even apart from holiday dinners, it's nice to eat in the dining room occasionally. (You paid for the whole house. Why not use it?) And you don't want to be simultaneously basting a turkey and trying to organize your tax documents off the buffet.
- Put things in their proper place. If they don't have a proper place, consider the possibility that said proper place is the donation bin or the trash can.
- Get in the habit of spending 10 minutes a day restoring order to these rooms. You decide when, before you leave for work or just before bed. If you keep up with it, you won't have to do another major clean before the holidays.
