November 10, 2007Just like runners stretch before they start the big race, it’s not a bad idea to start warming up for the Christmas shopping season with some low key events.
Many community groups are hosting holiday bazaars and craft shows over the next few weekends. In addition, your area may be playing host to a commercial craft show that brings in artists and artisans from around the region. It’s worth checking out the website of your community newspaper to find out what events are taking place this weekend. Papers often run a weekend calendar on Fridays. You can also search the LIving/Style section or the Community section online. That’s where I usually find the announcements.
Take an hour or two. Wander around the booths and see what’s on display. Buy some cider or hot chocolate to support the cause. (If they have funnel cake or elephant ears, buy one me, OK? With either powdered sugar or maple cream.) You never know when you’ll find the perfect gift for someone who’s tough to buy for.
Some things you are likely to find that make excellent gifts: scarf/mittens/hat combos; decorative glass pieces, such as mirrors; handmade stationery and journals; ceramic serverware; and, jewelry. You might get lucky and find a weaver’s booth. What’s nicer than hand-woven placemats or hand towels or a runner for the dining room table?
Even if you don’t buy anything, wandering around aimlessly, talking with people who love to make beautiful things is a great way to get your mind in the game. After all, the point of gift-giving is to share something beautiful with someone you love.
