Christmas Countdown – 13 Weeks

September 26, 2008Since the first week in June, I've been receiving a share of fruit and vegetables from a farm in Virginia through community supported agriculture.
I'm really glad I bought the share. It's gotten me to eat a lot more vegetables and to think about the seasonality of food. I'm cooking more at home as well. The apples I'm getting are beyond yummy. I also know that I'm supporting sustainable agriculture that's good for the earth.
There are downside too though. I get my share every week, regardless of my travel schedule. Often, it's really a challenge to use all the vegetables quickly. And since the veggies are picked at maximum ripeness, you have to use them fast because they go bad much more quickly.I get what the farmer has planted that has come ripe. That means I may get a squash and a bulb of garlic every week but get only one tomato or one green onion. It's really hard to craft a meal around varying quantities.
Will I do it again next year? Probably not. It doesn't fit my lifestyle well. I think I may commit to regular visits to a local farmer's market instead. It wll require more discipline on my part, but I think it fits my lifestyle better.
