Dog Days of August
August 2, 2013Productive Procrastination
August 12, 2013Last week I posted about the upside of business travel. I did have a very productive business trip. I had good meetings, went to a wonderful restaurant, and I had two lovely runs in a beautiful city. Alas, I had no time to shop.
But now I'm home. And it occurred to me that there's very little written about coming home from travel. There are columns, articles, and blog posts about getting ready to go away, but very little about coming home.
So, here is a list of helpful tips for coming home:
- It's important to focus on the basics. So your primary concerns should be making sure that you have something in the house that you can eat and making sure that bills with tight deadlines get paid. That means your top two chores are likely to be a mail sort and a grocery run — certainly within the first 24-48 hours.
- Unpack your suitcase as soon as possible. It's tempting to let it sit for a few days, grabbing things as you need them, but you'll re-acclimate to regular life faster if you unpack and put things away.
- Do your laundry. 'Nuff said.
- Try to avoid the temptation to work tons of extra hours to make up for the time you were away. If you were on a business trip, that's silly. YOU WERE DOING YOUR JOB. If you were on vacation, you'll counteract the relaxation.
- Block out some time to do things you like, even take a walk around the neighborhood or have dinner with friends. It will remind you why you like to come home!
