Despite what you see on soap operas, people really don't just drop by every time they have something to tell you. They call, text, or send an email.
The one time of year that people really will just drop by is the Christmas season (here loosely defined as December 10th through January 1st). During this time of year, it's not unusual for people to stop by with a plate of cookies or a guft or just to wish a Merry Christmas.
So now is the time to prepare for these drop-in guests:
- Decide where you will receive guests. You might invite folks into the living room or the family room or the kitchen. The key is to identify a space and the bathroom nearest to that space.
- The next step is to keep the visiting room and the guest bathroom clean. Make it a habit to check those rooms each day, either before you leave for work or as soon as you get home. Clear any clutter. Make sure there are fresh towls and enough toilet paper and soap. Maybe run a duster over things if necessary.
- Make sure there are some decorations in the visiting room. It need not be the place with your main tree, but the room should say "Christmas."
- Stock up on some basic refreshments so you'll have something to offer guests. On the liquid side, these might include some combination of the following: coffee, tea, beer, wine, soda, sparkling water, cider, egg nog. Make sure you have ice, cream, sugar, and glasses. On the food side, you can't go wrong with hummus and pita chips, or cheese and crackers, or some roasted and spiced nuts.
Do the basics now and when folks stop by, all you need to worry about is spending time with people you love. And isn't that the point?
