Christmas Music — The Bad
December 18, 2008Christmas Countdown — 3 days
December 22, 2008It's much easier for me to list the songs I love!
10) The Holly and the Ivy: An old English carol, gentle and lilting, meant to be sung by friends wandering house to house, stopping for wassail every so often.
9) We Three Kings: A haunting melody with lyrics that touch on the complexity of the event we celebrate.
8) A Baby Just Like You: A little known song that John Denver wrote for his infant son. It catches the mixture of joy and melancholy in a lovely lullaby.
7) Gabriel's Message: An old Basque carol. Here solely because it has the loveliest tune.
6) White Christmas: They'll never beat Bing's version. No matter where I am when I hear it, I'm transported to a horsedrawn sleigh in a snow covered landscape.
5) Angels We Have Heard on High: I just like singing the Glorias!
4) O Holy Night (Cantique de Noel): Despite the fact that this song has been tortured by waaaaay too many divas, I still love it. It has majesty and never fails to arouse a spirit of wonder.
3) Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas: Gentle, caring, honest, lovely.
2) Silent Night: Sung in German accompanied by solo guitar. It just doesn't get any better. Like most things, the simpler this song stays, the more beautiful it will be.
1) Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth: Bing Crosby/David Bowie. My Christmas season doesn't officially begin until I hear this song. No matter where I am, if this song is playing, I will stop and listen until it's over. Peace on earth. Can it be? My Christmas prayer.
