Loss of Seasonal Eating
July 14, 2017The Master Hint
July 21, 2017I read a LOT. I mean, really a lot. Typically, I read at least a book a week. So I thought that I would start reviewing some of the books that I read that might be of interest.
I just finished Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant. Given the topic it's not exactly beach reading. The book recounts Sheryl Sandberg's experiences after her husband David Goldberg died suddenly while on vacation. The co-author Adam Grant is a psychologist who addresses grief and resilience.
I found the book full of useful advice even for someone who hasn't faced a significant tragedy recently. One of the things I liked best is that it doesn't try to help you "get over your grief and move on." It recognizes that grief doesn't go away. It is always with us in some form and no one is immune. Instead it offers techniques and suggestions to help you go on with your life when Option A is off the table and only Option B is left. Because Ms. Sandberg is so honest the book is very helpful for anyone who has a friend facing grief. She states quite explicitly what advice and offers were truly not helpful to her.
Obviously the CEO of Facebook has access to resources that most of us can only dream about but at least she recognizes that. While her examples may be a bit out of my experience, the advice and techniques she offers require no special access or abundant income.
It's not a long book and it reads very quickly but the recommendations will stay with you.
