Happy Hanukkah!
December 11, 2009Drop-In Guests
December 15, 2009I'm hearing the same thing from a lot of people this year: I just don't feel the Christmas spirit. I just can't get excited about my preparations the way I normally do.
There doesn't seem to be a single reason: weather, work, the economy, etc. For many people, the burden just seems to be outweighing the joy.
I won't pretend to have the solution, but here are some ways to approach the situation:
- What activities or events spark the Christmas spirit in you? Whatever they are, do them! It could be listening to Christmas music, watching a special movie, volunteering time with those less fortunate, or just drinking hot cider in front of a fire.
- Don't force yourself to do things that don't excite you. If you don't want to put up a tree, don't. If other people count on you doing certain things, enlist their help in accomplishing them.
- Spend some time thinking about the meaning of the season. For some people, the meaning is predominantly religious. If so, focus on the religious activities. If Christmas for you is a holiday about family, prioritize family activities. Basically, put your energy, limited as it is, behind those things that have meaning for you.
- Simplify. The world will not end because you don't bake 8 varieties of cookies or wrap stacks of presents in handmade wrapping paper. Moderate expectations and do what you feel you can.
- Giving back will always bring the greatest joy. If you are having trouble getting excited about some aspect of the holiday, find a way to share it with someone. Invite someone who will be alone to share your Christmas dinner. Shop for Toys for Tots or something similar. Help decorate a local shelter. Sing Christmas carols at a retirement home. Joy is contagious. Maybe you'll catch it!
