Enjoying Summer
August 4, 2014Back to School Scheduling
August 8, 2014The back-to-school sales are in full force. Many states are holding their tax-free holidays in the next few weeks. Many college students (and some elementary and high schools) begin classes in the next few weeks.
So, what are my "Elf Hints" for smart back-to-school shopping:
- Start by knowing what you have. Dig out all the notebooks, pens, folders, etc. that didn't get used last year. Make sure you know what you have before you buy more. And this year, find a place to keep school supplies so that you don't end up buying more of what you've already got.
- Not everything has to be new. For school clothes (and bigger items like packpacks, calculators, other electronics, etc.), see what from last year can be re-used or passed down. (But do keep in mind that it's not fair that the oldest child is the only one who ever gets things new.) For college dorm rooms, consider re-using things you've upgraded. Redecorated the master bath and replaced the laundry hamper? The old one doesn't need to sit in the attic. It can go to college. Same with replaced bed linens, extra towels, extra casual dishes, etc. Going to college does not entitle one to a massive shopping spree.
- Once you know what you have, make a list of what you need, using the list provided by the school as a starting point.
- If you know your child uses a lot of a particular item (say, ball point pens or filler paper), but extra while they are on the back-to-school sale and store them until needed later in the school year.
- If you have a little extra right now, call your child's school or a needy school in the neighborhood and see if you can donate cash or goods to be used by the teachers or needy students. Keep in mind that most teachers spend a significant sum out of pocket to decorate and equip their rooms and to assist students who don't have what they need. If you can, share the burden.
Do you have any hints to share?
