May 1, 2015Abundance of Good Things: Part 2
May 7, 2015This week, I thought I'd do three posts about how to deal with an abundance of good things — a very nice way of saying: It's time to address the backlog that is cluttering much of your life.
Today's installment will address the DVR. If your DVR is more than 50% full, you need to address it soon. If your DVR is more than 75% full, you need to address it now. Here are some steps to keep in mind:
1) Don't let it get worse. Review your scheduled recordings to make sure you aren't DVRing things out of habit. If you already have 35 episodes of Judge Judy in your backlog and you haven't watched one in weeks, you can stop recording.
2) Take a quick roam through your listing to see what's there. You may have forgotten what's in the queue. More importantly, you may not care about some of the shows. that means you can delete them quickly and free up some space. For example, I DVRed the NHL All-Star game because I was out when it aired. Looking back 2 months later, I don't really care, so away it goes.
3) Instead of watching shows mindlessly "because there's nothing else on," use that time to watch shows off your queue.
4) Make judicious use of the fast forward button. I fast-forward through commercial breaks, title panels, intermissions and features during sporting events, and sometimes boring parts of shows. On a good day, I can get through 3 one hour episodes of a series in under 2 hours.
5) If you have several episodes of a series recorded, set aside time to binge watch. Since everything will be fresh in your mind, you won't have to go back and recall what happened 2 weeks ago.
6) If a show or movie turns out to be boring, you don't have to finish watching. You can just delete!
