MORE SNOW
February 10, 2010The Olympics Begin
February 12, 2010When you are snowed in for an extended period of time, it make you grateful for your pantry and freezer. Even if you can get to the grocery store, there's almost nothing on the shelves since supply trucks can't get in.
That means you use up that stuff that's been sitting on the shelves for a while. During the last 2 storms (dubbed Snowmageddon and Snowverkill), I used up a can of condensed milk to make snow cream. (I also used the chocolate and caramel syrup, whipped cream, and maraschino cherries I keep on hand.) I also made pasta with homemade sauce, using up a can of crushed tomatoes, some bacon, two onions, and a pound of penne. Last night, I made soup, using up more pasta, a partial bag of frozen mixed veggies, and two containers of broth. All in all, a nice dent in my stored goods.
If you don't have the excuse of a snow storm, consider throwing a "use it up" party. Defrost things from your freezer (especially good for casseroles, desserts, and soups) and/or use things from the pantry (those rogue condiments) to make appetizers. Invite your friends over to consume the goodies. it's sort of a pot luck, except you're the only one providing food. The food may match, it may not.
Just make sure you don't over cook. The goal is no leftovers!
