As we get ready to go back to school, it’s absolutely essential to create a bedtime routine. Having a routine makes sure that nothing slips through the cracks and its signals to everyone that it’s time to rest. Your routine will be unique to you, but here are some tasks you might consider:
You know how long it will take for your kids to accomplish all of these tasks, so start the routine that long (+ ten minutes) from bedtime. I find that it helps to write the routine down and post it somewhere. You can buy pads of newsprint that will stick to the wall and not damage the paint. When little ones stray from the routine, you can use the chart to gently guide them back. Once they have it mastered, you can recycle the page.
Remember, a routine isn’t a jail cell. If it doesn’t work for you after a week or two, change it until you find a pattern that works!
